I'm not a capsule wardrobe person. There, I said it.
The funny thing is, despite capsule wardrobes being lauded all over social media, I don't know a single woman with an actual capsule wardrobe, and no one has ever hired me to create one (I briefly offered this service when I started my business).
The real draw of a capsule wardrobe is its perceived simplicity. You have limited options, and all of the pieces look great together.
Fine. My personal hang up is I like to have OPTIONS (emphasis mine). A truly limited selection isn't going to encompass the variety of aesthetics I embrace or meet the needs of my lifestyle. I don't think I'm alone in this.
Feeling frustrated with your wardrobe and ready to "start over" with a capsule? Instead of starting from scratch (or buying all the recommendations of an influencer who doesn't know you/your needs), try this:
Create a subset of items from your existing wardrobe and commit to wear them for a fixed amount of time. For example, choose 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 shoes to wear for 2 weeks. Alternatively, increase those numbers and add dresses and third pieces for more options. Allow yourself to incorporate a variety of accessories, but don't dip back into your closet until you're no longer feeling overwhelmed.
By limiting your options, you decrease decision paralysis and get creative with the pieces you already own. Bonus: no purchases necessary and you can start literally any time.
In the long term, if you repeat this process, you'll be systematically wearing your existing wardrobe, gaining insight into what additions would be most beneficial, and learning about your personal Style Cornerstones in the process.
