Before buying this fall, ask yourself these two questions: "Do I already own this item (or something similar)? If not, why not?"
Â
Many fall wardrobe styles we're seeing feel extremely familiar this year. Suede, leather, autumnal shades, endless denim in every shape, jackets/blazers, and animal prints. IMO most of these are more traditional fall style themes than fleeting trends.
Â
On one hand, it's great we're seeing fall fashion that's recognizable because you've probably got a closet full of styles that are current! On the other hand, if you don't already have a piece in one of these common fall categories, it's worth at least asking why not before adding it to your wardrobe.
Â
For example, if your wardrobe doesn't already have pieces that are animal prints, reds, or browns, is it because those characteristics don't mesh with your personal style? Or have you been waiting for your perfect addition?
Â
There's no right or wrong, but if you generally dislike the way you look in red or animal prints feel too feral, stand your ground. You might end up wearing the piece once or twice this year, but it will be one of the first to be edited from your wardrobe when you're trying to make space for the new next year.
Instead, focus on making additions to your fall/winter wardrobe that will last multiple seasons. Invest in quality fabrics, versatility, and (this is my personal favorite category) unique pieces that bring you joy and will incorporate your personality into any look. Building your fall wardrobe should feel enjoyable as you incorporate new loves with old obsessions (and if it doesn't, I know who can help ;).
